As a non record label guru without the machinery to sell and market my product, I now have to think of new ways to sell the remaining vinyl I have in boxes stored in my spare room at home.

I am proud that I bothered to press up singles of Spyder Turners and Pree’s ‘Tell me (crying over you)’ and ‘Suddenly there’s you’. They were new songs that became co – writes with these legends and produced by Dennis Coffey in Detroit/March 2008. I managed to fathom out the digital sales mechanism and have them placed on iTunes and Amazon plus loads of other digital download sites that keep closing down. But getting 45 rpm American large hole vinyl shipped into England would be one hell of a challenge. I finally did it last October. With the help of my wife Michelle, who kindly aided me with the label graphics, the singles were pressed at Archer’s record pressing plant in Detroit and shipped to London via UPS. One of the best ambassadors for UPS is ‘Dave’ the delivery man! I have known him for a couple of years and often taken deliveries in for neighbours when he calls and gets no response from the apartment. I see him in the area almost daily delivering parcels all over the place. I said to him that I was pressing up 45’s and wouldn’t it be strange if he was the delivery man – and he was!

But the question is why did I bother with this gruelling task? I wanted my music on a format that had worth and a little romance. A hard copy is a tangible piece of media that can be produced, played, sold, but it can be seen, felt swapped, exchanged, or whatever. It’s not just about the song, but the notion that you can read the label and capture the spirit of the session, with dates and writing credentials instantly. Plus…you get a ‘B’ side! I could not afford extra tunes, so simply put on the instrumental on the flip side.

I was happy to pursue the pressings as a challenge to replicate what may have happened 40 years ago with other small producers. I have learnt, to make this work, there needs to be a bigger machine in place to be cost effective and even break even. There is one thing I must stress, that if the public want vinyl, they must somehow try and support record shops, who in turn stock the product often laying out funds in advance pending sales. I cannot afford to give credit, I am not a bank. It cost well over £3500 to press up the singles and ship in, so my retail price is not cheap. I figured that with the quality of the songs, musicians on the session, the story etc, the singles would sell and I would at least break even. I was wrong. I need to do more marketing and promotion of the releases and keep the buzz alive. This has been a valuable lesson, but one I will cherish. To see my dreams on a physical 45 rpm record was a thrill when I opened the boxes after delivery. Mission accomplished!! Well nearly…..

The singles are still for sale. See the right hand side of this blog for details. But why not support ‘Funky Feet Records’ who have invested in my releases since last November. Their web address for Spyders track is:

http://www.funkyfeetrecords.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=760

or Pree’s:

http://www.funkyfeetrecords.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=762

By purchasing the vinyl you are supporting the writers (Me, Spyder and Pree) artist (Spyder and Pree), musicians, producers (Dennis and me), investors (me), record pressing plant (Mike Archer), UPS US, the airline, UPS UK (Dave), Funky Feet Records (Mark) the label (Bandtraxs/me), Ready Case (who make the mailers to post the records in), the Post Office, my wife (Michelle) who for a pair of Sketchers trainers, did my art work ha ha!

Listen to the tracks here: www.youtube.com/bandtraxs

Finally, the 45 rpm of Spyder Turner singing 'Tell me(crying over you)' & Pree singing 'Suddenly there's you' on the 'Bandtraxs' label are for sale The cost of this first exclusive pressing by Archers of Detroit is £10 each including package and postage! Van De Pitte was responsible for the arrangments of my Detroit session songs. He took my vocal/instrumental ideas from the demos I sent over prior to the session and created hand written full notation. No computers involved! After the recording session I was presented with sheet music, which I will treasure. Above is just one page of 'Suddenly there's you' and you can cleary see how intricate it is. Going back further in time, I created the chords and melody in Logic Audio, my sequencer package. Once the demo is ready to record, I record the composite output of wav/midi instruments (as I also do a little live guitar etc) into a stereo left and right instrumental.

Prestatyn soul weekender March 2010

Very proud to announce 'Tell me'/Spyder Turner was played in the connoisseur room at this venue. They have suspended their server up load facility, which means I have to send by mail the master recordings on a CD-R, which I think is almost like going backwards in this day and age. They allow everything else via email/server upload and I am confused why they feel they cannot cope with files on a server, yet on a CD, there are no problems. It remains a paradox for the moment. Tunecore on the other hand, can do server uploads, but not physical sales. No wonder music business models struggle....

45 rpm vinyl test pressings arrive London!

Well, the test pressings are here, so now I must scrutonise the recordings with a view to ordering the 500 of each song. The Philly material has come on leaps and bounds and the 'Double Exposure' track "Soul Recession" and various mixes will soon be for sale. I have been lucky enough to have been to Philadelphia for the second leg of my project last September and worked with legendary writer, guitarist, producer Bobby Eli and amazingly in his own studio on a number of songs. What a thrill to be with him and watch how the professionals craft the song from start to finish. I have learnt so much about studio etiquette and procedures as well as song writing. I always maintained that it was the musicians who give the sparkle to the recordings and I think I am right. The magic that took place in Bobby's' studio is evident in the quality of the song writing and hooks that came up throughout the session.

When 'Double Exposure' came into the studio to learn and rehearse the song, things started to fall into place. They came up with fantastic harmonies and ideas that enhance the song and make it a masterpiece, well, that's my opinion! Bobby has spent countless hours mixing and mastering to get things just right and soon, there will be a number of exciting mixes for sale as digital download in the first instance, plus a CD to follow. We may even press up some celebratory 12" records with a two fold view of respecting the very first artists who had a release on a 12" record back in 1976 -'Double Exposure'!! And of course the format, which even though it is 2009, is still going strong. We have also been joined by Tom Moulton and John Morales who have created very special mixes that give their interpretation to the song. So whether for the car, the club, the iPod, the pub, there will be a version of 'Soul Recession' that will fit the bill. More news soon....stay tuned.

David J. My Detroit project came to life when Dennis Coffey offered to help and in doing so asked David whether he would be interested in providing his arranging services from my demos. He said yes, and what a thrill to have him on board for a musical journey of a lifetime for me. He was respectful, funny and a great motivator in the studio. He was telling me some great stories from back in the Motown days. Now, I have my personal stories to cherish from my session in Detroit. I was so lucky to have met him and have a unique banter that I never thought in a million years would ever happen. There was one thing he whispered in my ear about my demos which was quite funny, and it really did make my day "man, I must say your demos are like the real thing...well almost, you know what I mean". That floored me there and then, and we chuckled together about the comment...

R.I.P. David and thank you for being part of my dream coming true.

More from the Detroit news here.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://carlsmusic.blogspot.com/2009/08/david-van-de-pitte-motown-arranger.html' title='David J. The releases will be digital download first via Amazon/iTunes, to see what the interest is before I commit finances to the 45 rpms I have promised and indeed the Bandtraxs project CD which I am planning for later this year or early next.

Now, the songs are registered for writing and performer royalties should I be lucky enough to glean anything from air play, and of course as a 'label' I could maybe earn something to share with the performers on the session. But, it is early days yet, so my next step is to contact some of the radio DJ's I know with a view to seeing if they are interested in the material. It's all cloak and dagger stuff because I have sent so much already and not heard a thing! Maybe it's still a big secret.

Bandtraxs Production purchases

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5340487093168167058" style="WIDTH: 235px; You can go here for a web cast or even download the programme to your PC (right mouse click and ‘save target as’):
http://www.therighttrack.org.uk/latest_show.html
The programme showcases Spyders musical career and even plays material from when he was just 17 years old. The interview was fun, informative and Spyders sense of humour prevailed throughout. In addition, Harry played the unreleased ‘Tell me (crying over you)’/Spyder Turner & ‘Detroit (city by the river)/Bandtraxs. These tracks were cut at Studio A, Dearborn Heights, Detroit in 2008 with Spyder, Pree and Gayle Butts on vocals and a wealth of musical talent from the city. These two tracks and Pree’s ‘Suddenly there’s you’ are due for digital release very soon. There may also be an opportunity to hear a couple of the tracks we cut last year together in March 2008 at Studio A/Dearborn Heights. “Tell me (crying over you)/Spyder Turner” & “Detroit (city by the river)/Bandtraxs” were just two out the four songs completed that week and if lucky Harry may be tempted to spin at least one of them…or even both. Here are the details for Harry’s programme.

The Right Track Soul Show
Salford City Radio 94.4 fm
Sunday nights 8.00 pm - 10.00 pm
http://www.salfordcityradio.org/
email: righttrack@salfordcityradio.org
http://www.therighttrack.org.uk/
Studio Number: 0161 793 2944 / 2942

Feel free to spread the word by email forwarding, posting on your blogs, Facebook and forums! This was such a shock, as he had complications earlier this year and was in hospital recovering well, or so it seemed. I was honoured to meet him on a number of occasions and indeed he performed on my Detroit session last year. I shall never forget him as one way or another he has been part of my musical quests since about 1970. When I was just 15 years old I realised something was happening in Detroit and wanted to know who the musicians were. Uriel was part of that dream and through Alan Slutskys book 'Standing in the Shadows of Motown' , I finally found out what his name was around 1992! In 2002 I travelled to Detroit with some colleagues and met him at Ann Arbour Library where he was performing with Joe Hunter, Marcus Belgrave, Fred Bryant, and Tonya Hood. I had the honour of cleaning his shoes for him as a fun gesture. In 2006 Philly producer, writer, musician Bobby Eli invited me to attend the 'Soulful Tale of two Cities' Detroit session, and again I met Uriel and all the musicians at the studio. Of course, my session in Detroit last year was a thrill to see him and the others tailor my songs in true Detroit style with the help of Dennis Coffey co producing and arrangments by David van de Pitte.

My condolances go to his family and friends who have lost a gifted and talented individual that has inspired so many. He will never be out my life, that's for sure. Yesterday I uploaded a track called "Don't tell your mama" by CDO to an aggregator, who will place the tune for sale in iTunes, Amazon and a host of other digital stores worldwide. This test will prove the functionality available with saleable digital media, so I can swiftly release some of the Detroit recordings I cut last year, without the headache of what button I should press next! I still would very much like to press 45rpm records and that, for the moment is on hold due to the terrible dollar rate. More news and a press release, when the above track has finally reached the public.

Purchase "Don't tell your mama" in the UK here.
Purchase "Don't tell your mama" in the US here.

British music rights agencies

Well, I have to confess that over the last few months I have learnt much about the music business and frankly it frightens me to death. How on earth do musicians and artists make a living these days with the state of sales around the world? Their music almost becoming worthless as prices drop for MP3's etc and the extinction of the CD - maybe. I read the CD is 'nearly' dead, except that it is making a revival in South America because artists are taking to the streeets to sell the physical copy face top face with hopeful fans of their music with a view to attracting them to live gigs. Maybe that is the solution with my songs!

I really want to ensure that I do my homework on the performing rights and writer royalty issue I have been so worried about. My final quest before I commit money to press up the Detroit singles is to investigate the PPL, here in the UK. This agency acts on behalf of record labels and performers. If I can crack this nut, I will press up 500 singles of each Detroit recording and then upload to iTunes and Amazon and see what happens. I will send out a press release to radio stations and use blogs, facebook and forums to get the word out about these great songs and artists! Then the fun will begin......

TSOP! Fresh out of Studio E, Philadelphia, this is a track they have been working on recently and it holds the key to the massive issues we have around the world today. Their passion for singing shows and I hope their efforts here are not overlooked.

More news about the track soon!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://carlsmusic.blogspot.com/2008/10/tsop-double-exposure.html' title='TSOP! I am hoping the statitistics alone will give me an overview of the marketing I need to do to attract potential customers. I am not happy with some of the aggregators and how they are getting rights assigned to them and selling the music for peanuts. The artists, musicians and producers are worth more and until I am satisfied that the sterling efforts of these people are represented with a decent royalty, I am deliberating the right move. After 3 wonderful weeks in the studio with legendary writer, musician and producer Bobby Eli, I came home arriving after a night flight from Philadelphia last Saturday morning, with only one day before I returned to work for 4 x 12 hour gruelling shifts starting at 7am. This meant with the jet lag and excitement of returning home with some great rough cuts, I was frustrated because I could not spend time reflecting what I had actually done and post on my blog. Plus I was exhausted. Never before have I fallen asleep on the couch with my eyes open! It happened twice! So what does that say??

The above photo sums up the sound of Philadelphia: Earl Young, Bobby Eli, Dennis Harris, Rickie Hicks, Jimmy Williams and T G Conway were the rhythm section that laid down the tracks in the studio! Over two days the guys crafted the songs to their high standards by examining the demos and working out what would be best to make the songs flow with that typical Philly groove. The passion these people displayed was why, I think, so many great records came out the city in the past. They exchanged ideas and I think by the end of day two, wanted to stay and do more. I was and still indebted to these people. They have encouraged me for many reasons to try and emulate them. Now I know why I cannot, their genius says it all.

Bobby's attention to detail in the studio is clearly one of the reasons his work is admired by so many, not only the musical side of things but the technical studio things too. I was privileged to witness the musicians warming up and exchanging ideas about the song structure and those providing vocals, Chiquita Green, Janice McClain and Double Exposure, working around vocal phrasing and ideas to make the songs have a better appeal. This is their craft and they all do it very well. While this was happening Bobby was ensuring the technical side of things was addressed for a good recording in addition to answering all sorts of appropriate questions from everybody. Of course his relationship with Wah Wah's coffee, just down the road got me hooked as well - either French vanilla or hazelnut....yummy.

Now, I need to buy another hard drive to put the video footage on I have. I do not have much vocal stuff, but enough to make up a rhythm compilation like before. It will work and I need to do that in the next couple of weeks.

Philly session update 23/9/2008

Well, the four tracks are sounding great. In addition I am familiar with the bell foundry here in London where it was cast all those years ago. I too had a bell cast there for an anniversary present for my wife a few years ago. Now, my plans are taking me from London to Philadelphia where phase 2 of my sessions will take place at the legendary Bobby Eli's 'Studio E' in the city. Bobby's legendary status is well respected not only for his song writing skills, but productions and guitar work on all those Philly hits created at Sigma Sound down Nth 12th Street!

I first became aware of Bobby around 1973 when I started to take note of writing and musician credits the back of LP covers. I noticed that his name appeared more and more with respect to TSOP, MFSB, Salsoul and indeed on song writing and production credits too. I was very curious about many of the song writing teams at that time and aspired to them like I did with respect to the Detroit scenario. I started to realise that names like 'Eli/Barrett', 'Baker, Harris, Felder, Young', 'Hurtt/Bell', 'Gamble/Huff' were influencing me greatly and started to analise the music and arrangements. What I would have given to be a fly on the wall on those early seventies sessions! It's no secret that defining moments came whilst listening to a number of Philly compositions and arrangements on the radio or dance floors of Hull night clubs. 'A mother for my children' by The Whispers, 'I'm doin' fine' by New York City and 'Got to get you back' by The Sons of Robin Stone were just 3 of the songs that had me investigating even more. All three were written by different partnerships, but shared a similarity. Again, a quest to learn more ensued and circa 1977 I purchased the a book called 'The Sound of Philadelphia' by Tony Cummings. Whilst reading it one day I flipped a page open and saw a picture of Bobby Eli, with his seventies cap on! I asked myself whether one day I would meet him just to say thank you for the melodies, and the reply came back 'yes you will'. That was the seed sown that so many years down the line would grow and grow, bear fruit and have me wondering which universe I resided in! Through technology and the Internet I met Bobby and we exchanged stories about the songs. On the one hand the exciting stories from the studios that I pined for from him, plus my humble offerings from a dance floor perspective. From back in the day I knew within 1 second of a record playing whether it would empty the dance floor or not and for Philly material, which was new, you could often see a slight stagger on the floor as dancers came to terms with a new sound they were not familiar with. I witnessed song s becoming classics even though they never charted and I often wondered what writers thought when they knew their songs were being played in discos half way around the world and moreover how much influence they were having on hundreds of soul fans.

So fingers crossed this September, I will be with Bobby in the studio witnessing first hand how the professionals create a Philly song in that early to mid seventies style I so admire. Must dash...I have some lyrics to write. More news soon...

Philadelphia - Phase 2 of my dream sessions

Now that my Detroit session is complete, I can concentrate on how to sell the product to potential soul fans. Not being in the record business does not help, but over the last few months I have gleaned valuable information about all sorts of things. For example record distribution is an art. Somebody else takes care of the delivery and financial issues whilst I concentrate on writing more songs. Distribution is expensive, and I am wondering whether the small run of vinyl I will do, does not simply justify it being sold from the Bandtraxs web site and Ebay. The mp3's are earmarked for 7digital who have a number of interesting services and report PRS/PPL too! Phase 2 of my sessions is almost upon me. I still have lyrics to write for the three songs that will go to Philadelphia for the Philly treatment. This year I would like to get both sessions under my belt for a number of personal reasons, and it will also give me a well earned rest for the end of the year and allow me to concentrate on the business side of this, which by the way I never really intended to do. It should be 'mission accomplished', but I see the story moving on with all sorts of twists and turns. More news on Philadelphia very shortly.........

Bandtraxs - Detroit session promo - March 2008

Here is my Detroit session promo which clearly shows the excitement generated in Studio A/Dearborn Heights last March. For one soul fan it became more than that. Carl Dixon tells There’s That Beat! of his journey from soul fan to songwriter/record producer in D-Town. A lifelong ambition that I’m sure will resonate with many a reader . I have been investigating how I can release the material here in the UK and indeed the US. Now that the CD single is just about dead, I am proposing 7” vinyl for bespoke collectors who still enjoy the format and mp3 downloads via a digital media aggregator. The 7” vinyl will be sold in some record shops hopefully as well an Ebay store which is already standing by for the first shipment. What does concern me however, is the aggregators’ percentage they take from the retail-selling price. To see prices as low as 79p in the UK and 99 cents in the US less about 30% charges for the service I feel music production is becoming the poor relation to the entertainment industry and the victim of media exploitation. Take the American scenario where I would earn about 35p before I pay UK tax and production/singing royalties I am bound (and want) to pay.

Stay tuned for the band website and more information soon….

Detroit Session March 2008 audio snippet

Now the dust has cleared before my eyes and I am back down to Earth, I thought it would be appropriate to post a snippet of one of the songs recorded in March at the session. This song called 'Tell me (Crying over You)' was intended to be one of those Detroit style songs featuring revered session musicians who would have been on hundreds of non Motown Detroit recordings. When I wrote the song, in my mind I pictured Uriel Jones on drums and the likes of Dennis Coffey and Bob Babbit on the session and imagined it was around 1968/9. I also visualised Spyder Turner singing lead vocals and as the song matured and we approached nearer to the session, I realised all four would be performing on the recordings in Studio A! Of course, just as important as back in the day, there would a selection of other prized musicians taking part.

For soul fans who like those obscure recordings that surface from Detroit, I wanted to not only pay homage to the musicians, artists and arrangers in Detroit, but to the fans in the UK and now the world who have a passion for this music too. Without them, I am sure my journey would have been different, but their commitment to this style of music over this long period of time is worth mentioning. They too are an inspiration and must not be overlooked when we speak about Detroit's great soul producing years. Listen here to a few seconds of the track:

Tell me (Crying over You)

Remember there are no synths on this or any of the other songs recorded in the studio. There were real horns and vibes which give the song a great retro quality feel. If anybody is interested, there is an article in the Detroit News this week about the session:

http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080412/ENT04/804120363

There are photos and an interesting video clip during the studio recording of 'Suddenly there's you'. Also it is time to mention the wonderful camaraderie in the studio. Taking my demo material and turning them into something of worth was a very professional affair. What I learnt was how writers, singers, arrangers and producers interact and collaborate together. With that in mind Spyder came up with some great lyric improvements on 'Tell me (crying over you)', which we implemented into the song. This means the writing credits will include Spyder, which I am thrilled about. To have my name associated with talent like this leaves me speechless (which is very unusual at the best of times). Also, Pree came up with a great improvement on 'Suddenly there's you'. She explained what she had done, and the new lyric flows just like a delicious Burgundy! What I must insist on is the true power in their voices on the session. This is their expertise and passion and it shows. Wait 'til you hear the full songs in a better bandwidth.

And I must mention the fantastic solos performed on three of the tracks. Dennis Coffey did a wonderful guitar solo on 'Tell me (crying over you)', and George Katsakis and Gil Bridges did sax solos on 'Detroit (city by the river) and 'Glory Fleeting'. I think the guitar solo Dennis did has mileage to be a good hook in the song, a virtuoso performance that will become historical and discussed, and my wife said she wanted it has her ring tone on her mobile phone! She thinks it's the best part of the song ha ha! Also the wonderful backing vocals included Spyders daughter Gayle Butts! Absolutely out of this world. I must also mention bass guitarist Bob Babbit who agreed to come on the session. When you eventually hear 'Tell me', towards the end of the song he starts to play just like you would expect from one of the worlds premier bass players. He was dancing up and down the frets, if that is the right expression, and to hear that on something that was created as a midi demo in 2004, just took my breath away.

Please check out my favourite links on the right hand side to read profiles of those who may have been involved with the session.

Stay tuned...

Detroit Session - Complete!

Finally, my dream was realised in Detroit, week commencing 24th March 2008. Four songs were completed at Studio A in Dearborn Heights both music and vocals:

http://www.studioarecording.com/

What a fantastic studio, with very professional staff and facilities. The Steinway grand (1872) was just out of this world. What a privilege to have some of the great Detroit musicians and singers on my songs, as well as an instrument over 130 years old. It made me feel positively young. Todd Fairall, the engineer, is a delight to work with and nothing is too much trouble. He knows the equipment backwards and makes it all look so simple. He recently won an award too which we were all thrilled to hear about.

Dennis Coffey and I co produced the material and the session commenced with the rhythm tracks being recorded for the four chosen songs. I witnessed how the professionals would have crafted the same back in the 1960’s. The difference today was the recording media. The studio uses state of the art digital techniques and recording which simplify the production immensely and allows several takes to be recorded whilst the creativity in the studio is still red hot. I am familiar with the mechanics of 2” tape from my TV employment and can honestly say that today’s Pro Tools was a great ally in studio rather than the cumbersome format of 40 years ago. Yes, I have mixed feelings about this too, but I accept new technology like HD TV, mobile phones and microwaves that help enhance my life and make things easy. That debate for another day….

One of the pre requisites of the session was no synthesizers to appear on any of the tracks and indeed that is the case. Also I wanted real vibraphones and that became a reality too. Even Rob Pipho the vibe player could not believe that only the real deal on my songs would qualify! The rhythm section reads like this – Dennis Coffey co producer and guitar, Uriel Jones and Spider Webb on drums, Ray Monette on guitar, Bob Babbit on bass guitar, Robert Jones on the Steinway Grand, Dennis Sheridan and Larry Frantangelo on percussion, and all arranged by David van der Pitte. To see David’s hand written charts for my songs made me shiver. He does not believe in computers and does not have an email address. He listens to the demos and hand writes the music on proper sheet music. I hope to frame one of them because they are a work of art. On the horns we had John Trudell, George Benson, David Jennings, Ed Gooch and Mark Berger, plus great solos by George Katsakis of The Royaltones fame and Gil Bridges of Rare Earth! Rob Pipho was on vibes.

Spyder Turner and Pree supplied some terrific lead vocals and Spyders daughter, Gayle Butts helped with backing vocals too. They sound out of this world. Spyders voice is rich, mature and luscious and really uplifted the songs to another level. Pree sang her heart out and despite a cold, injected even more energy into ‘Suddenly there’s you’. I think once these songs are available, I am hoping my homage to these artists and musicians will pay off, because I am sure they capture the energy and soul of yesteryear but with a fresh and vibrant sound that could encourage others like me to do the same over there. The Detroit vibe and creative process is still alive and sounding as good as ever. It must not be ignored.

I am hoping to create a project web site to showcase everything that went on during the 3 days in the studio and hopefully some more photos and a little video footage, plus audio snippets too. Then, if anybody is interested in supporting the project or indeed further projects, simply buy the product if you like it. That way, I can put money back in the pot to create more music from these talented professionals who have helped my dream come true. I know many young and old have been very supportive to me over the last few years, with my endeavours. One Soul Source member offered to make a donation to the project, which put a tear in my eye. Clearly this person feels the same way about the creativity these people have given fans over the years. Because of that offer I decided to invite people to support the project by purchasing the product. Originally, this was a personal project and not for sale. I think it would be criminal not to pursue a route where real soul fans can at least hear the material. I hope to release one of the songs and would love to work on some radio exposure if I can. I do have a plan and if anybody has any ideas, feel free to suggest. At present I am fishing about for interest from record labels who could exploit this better than myself.

Stay tuned for updates…

Detroit Session Alert - March 2008

Finally, the wheels are in motion for a March recording session in Detroit. We fly out next week for a short vacation then into Detroit where co producer, writer and guitarist, the legendary Dennis Coffey, will help me achieve the dreams of recording my compositions with that all important 'Detroit' vibe. Some of the musicians on the session have amazing pedigrees and a respected status in the business. These people are the ones who breathe life into the words and music that originate on a piece of paper or demo recording. Just a few of the names read like the cream of Detroit’s finest - Dennis Coffey on guitar, Spyder Turner on vocals, George Katsakis (The Royaltones) on sax, Ray Monette (Cool Jerk, all Invictus recording, hundreds of soul records etc and Rare Earth member) on guitar, Gil Bridges (Rare Earth) on sax, members of The Funk Brothers and John Trudell and the Motown horn section. In addition legendary arranger David van de Pitte is involved and I am thrilled that all agreed to come on board and contribute to the session.

There will be a day cutting the band tracks and horns, another for the vocals and backing, and a day mixing. I will be able to see how the songs are crafted into final mixes by the experts. I must admit I have been a little ambitious with my notion of future proofing the songs. With today’s technology I see a demand for alternative mixes and solo instrumentals. With that in mind there may be a chance to lay down some arrangements to give extra potential revenue streams should I decide to go down the route of making the songs available for purchase. That was never the intention all those years ago when I first realised I wanted to emulate and pay homage to these musicians. But now I realise these artists have to be seen and heard with fresh new songs and recordings because of their outstanding contribution to the music business over the years. I am starting to feel a resurgence of decent music which employs the phenomenal talents of those who have perfected their instruments over the years. And retro soul grooves seem to be appearing in a number of chart releases these days so why not use the real deal on the sessions rather than a sample off a CD, for example?

More news soon…..

Detroit Session Update March 2008

The Detroit session is nearly organised! This month I travel to the city for the long anticipated recording session of three, maybe four of my own compositions. My co producer has been showing me how the professionals coordinate and arrange such an event, which by all accounts is a little unusual. This, probably because I am self financing as a personal venture, but maybe with a view to releasing the material here in the UK should I get my head around how to do it.

Paying homage to the musicians and producers who gave me the music in the first place is my current goal, but there is a bigger picture and it becomes clearer each day. One thing for sure is that this music will have real people playing real instruments on it where possible. The session will have two drummers, two guitars, bass, percussion, horns and I really want real vibes too. I think if you want soul music, it comes from people playing and collaborating in a studio environment not loops and samples from a bedroom studio (which is where I do my demos strangely enough!). Proper music, played by proper musicians for proper people!

Another thing I have realised over the last few months is that the electronics associated with computers, audio capture, compression and streaming is changing the music business. The price of storage media being so cheap is making it possible to download and not pay for music etc without any regard or consideration for artists, writers or record labels intellectual property rights. This is very sad as I am sure most fans would want to pay their dues when listening to their favourite music. It seems that live events and merchandising generate revenue by more traditional methods and the recorded music just appears on mp3 and iPod players world wide by a number of good and bad means. It is a paradox where what seems like an honest person walking down the street listening to some recorded music they did not purchase, enters a shop and buys a bar of chocolate for a few pence and does not realise they have not paid residuals to anybody for those recordings blairing out in their ears!. This is a big problem and something I have to consider should I pursue the next phase of this event.

In the meantime, I am excited about the prospect of watching some of my heroes perform in a studio on my material. What more could an English soul fan ask for! This is long over due...

Detroit Session Update

For those remotely interested, my Detroit session plans are coming along nicely. The plan is to cut three of my songs ‘Detroit’ style with some wonderful musicians and artists at a studio in the city early next year. Savings are coming along, and the budget plans are being worked on too. I have this notion of a string section and am working on the possibility of having them on all the songs selected to sweeten up the rhythm tracks for extra mixes etc. Singers are the next thing to consider as indeed, finalising my lyrics and how I perceive the song to ultimately sound.

I am also in the process of deciding which songs to take to Philadelphia next year too. The plan for Philly is to have one song recorded with that 1965 era Philly sound, which would have featured the likes of the Chamber brothers on guitar and drums, Vince Montana on vibes and arrangement by Richard Rome and more than likely recorded at 309 (Cameo Parkway) studios (where ‘At the top of the Stairs’ was recorded I believe!). One track I have sounds similar to a Len Barry production, which may qualify. The other two tracks will be either MFSB/Salsoul in sound (hopefully) or one of them a ‘non PIR’ sound Philly track if that makes sense. I am a big fan of Eli/Barrett productions of the early seventies like’ The Sons of Robin Stone’ for example. I have no lyrics yet for the Philly stuff and indeed no song titles as such, but I am getting there. ‘First Choice’ were great and I love that ‘Philly Groove’ production from the early 1970’s.

By the end of next year I want to have six songs with vocals and various mixes. Then, if they sound good enough, I will decide whether to press up some 45rpm records (as I have always wanted to go through that process) and CD’s. If this works out and anybody is interested they will be able to hear short, low bandwidth versions on my web site for scrutinising and consideration. I spoke to a record shop in London who were very encouraging and said they would possibly stock the product if it was their genre of music. They said it was unusual to have the writer of a song walk into the shop and ask before anything was recorded!

More news in the new year…..

The Temptations/Four Tops - Royal Albert Hall 19th November 2007

On the 19th November 2007, my wife and I attended The Royal Albert Hall in London to see The Four Tops and Temptations. I must say how good the evening was and the energy that both groups put in to their performances was outstanding. The Four Tops commenced the evening with a montage of their hits and did a special with Theo Peoples performing a rather long version of the 'Heatwave' classic 'Always and Forever'. His voice is superb. Duke Fakir won the audience over with his introduction to the 'new kids on the block' being the other members of the group and a lovely tribute Renaldo Benson and Lawrence Payton and mentioning that Levi Stubbs had to retire due to illness. The groups’ enthusiasm and professionalism was tip top and a joy to witness. I will be going again to see them, whenever they visit these shores. Any young aspiring singer or writer must not miss the chance to witness this style of performance.

The Temptations were electric. Their energy and vocal harmonies are 100% out of this world. They sang many of their big hits and introduced each other with Otis Williams being last. Without a doubt Bruce Williamson, has one of the greatest soul singing voices I have ever heard. This line up has a classy style and delivery they must all be proud of. Talk about slick and effortless.

If you love soul music of the past, you cannot fail to enjoy witnessing the cream of the crop performing together on one bill. I bought myself a T shirt, programme and met Ron Tyson afterwards. I managed to raise his eyebrows when I mentioned the Philly group 'The Ethics' he was in. We sang 'Standing on the inside' together, well almost, I think we both forgot the lyrics!

Flickr Photos

I have finally linked to my Flickr account where you can see photographs of The Velvelettes in action. From these comments I may well decide which tracks I record in Detroit. I have also received some encouragement from people interested in my songs and some questions about how I write and record them in this demo form. With that in mind I am still working on my plans to record three numbers next year in Detroit. All part of the grand scheme......

Here is the url, with even more songs on there now:

http://uk.youtube.com/profile?user=55Motown

Dream Girls

Last week I managed to see the film called 'Dream Girls', which showcases Detroit's music activity around the 1960's. I must admit, I dreaded sitting down and actually watching it, as I knew in the back of my mind I would be critical about the songs and musical arrangments. I was right to be apprehensive. The songs did not sound like the era at all and I felt they could have done much better. At one stage I wanted to switch off and do something else. There was some good acting throughout and excellent costumes etc, but it was exactly what I had expected.

You Tube

I have finally taken the plunge and created a You Tube account to showcase some of my material. Go here to 'see' some of my songs:

http://uk.youtube.com/55Motown

I am amazed at the number of posts regarding 'Northern Soul' on the site. Quite clearly there are a number of fans who want the world to know their passion and by editing these small clips with records on, they are doing just that. I have spent hours watching and listening to these clips. Only if some of the artists could realise the committment these people have had since they were kids or when they found out about the music. This life long ambition of mine is slowly taking shape with the all important budget considerations taking place right now. As I am not in the business I hope to collaborate with those who can ensure a swift and wonderful experience for me resulting in at least 3 songs per city....I hope!

My first port of call will be Detroit for a number of reasons. Philadelphia will follow as soon as funds are available, as this is all self financed at the moment. At present this is a personal goal which I decided to do as far back as 1974 whilst stood on the dance floor at Baileys disco in my home town of Hull. It was to be a big thank you gesture to those in the business who have inspired me in the first place. I was always hopeful I would meet some of my heroes and on a number of instances it happened!

More news when I have it!

Jimmy Scott and his Band, in London

On the17th May 2007, I attendded a gig at Ronnie Scott's in central London to see legendary artist Jimmy Scott. He performed a number of ballads with his band , The Expressions, including 'Body and Soul' and 'Pennies from Heaven'. Great stuff.

Whilst I was negotiating my entry rights to the club earlier, none other than Mr and Mrs Scott arrived by taxi and I was honoured to assist the party getting to the dressing room. It was nice to meat Jeannie, for a fleeting moment, as she had quite a bit to do. I was happy to sit at the bar and drink fresh apple juice and witness the proceedings on stage.

Thanks Jeanie and Mr Jimmy Scott for a lovely evening. George Katsakis, and engineer Brian Genoa toiled again for me last week to provide the extra track of subliminal sax instrumentation that I thought would enhance the song although much lower in amplitude compared the main saxophone parts. Listen here to the latest version:

Glory Fleeting

I am also delighted to mention that last Tuesday, 20th March 2007, 'The Right Track Soul Show' on WFM opened their proceedings with the track as their talk-over bed, which again, was a lovely surprise. Even more so when ‘The Right Track Soul Show’ hosted by Has and Di each Tuesday evening from the studios of WFM Manchester, played my current endeavour on the airwaves last night the 6th March 2007. It was a total surprise to me as the song is not quite finished yet and still needs some work on it. However, Harry must have thought otherwise and gave ‘Glory Fleeting’ the thumbs up by playing it twice throughout the evening. Once in its entirety and another as the gig guide backing track (where my Internet connection lost it for 2 minutes!)

‘Glory Fleeting’ was written in 2004 as was known simply as ‘8’ for 2 years as I had no title. I was doing a project which needed 10 songs for a possible movie, which never happened (but may). Then after a conversation with my father about his life in the Royal Navy:

http://www.carlsen.karoo.net/

I decided that this song should have a title connected to the Navy and to those who risk their lives for us to be free. The lyrics are complete and now I am on the hunt for male vocalists who may be interested in this 1960’s style Detroit soul composition. I have an idea who may be interested and resides in 'D' Town! Here is the clip from 'The Right Track Soul Show' and ‘Glory Fleeting’ can be heard approximately 1min 28sec in:

'Listen to 'Glory Fleeting'

In addition, of great importance is the recent saxophone addition that has been mixed on the track was performed by legend George Katsakis and engineered by Brian Genoa in Detroit. This is a first for me and clearly something I feel may well be a route worth pursuing in future. Please read the blog entry below about George and visit his web site for more information about his extraordinary career in the music business.

My special thanks to Harry and Di, for making me shiver from top to toe so many times with the records they play I have never heard before and taking the trouble to consider new and refreshing endeavours from myself and others.

Glory fleeting........George Katsakis

My passion for an authentic sound, rather than a synthesiser, has recently moved up a rung or two on the ladder. This time with the help of musician George Katsakis in Detroit, some real saxophone tracks have been recorded for a new song of mine. I first met George in 2003 at 'Clawsons' where he appears regularly with the house band 'Three's Company' and then in Detroit again at The Soulful Tales sessions in 2006. His contribution to the music business over the many years of performing and recording have been extraordinary. He was an original founding member of 'The Royaltones' who had no less than three hit record instrumentals around the world. In addition the group played backing for none other that hit maker Del Shannon. I now have the chance to try and mix real sounds within one of my songs rather than synth ones, which in my opinion, cheapen a whole production. With talent around like George, it would be discourteous not to consider the heart and soul of an individual who could help bring a song alive and give it the momentum that real musicians can achieve! Here is Georges' home page details:

http://www.saxkat.com/saxkatcgi/index.pl?init=1

Stay tuned for the updates....

Birth of the Detroit Sound 1947 to 1964

I am pleased to inform that the above 'before Motown' multi media presentation takes place at the Wayne State University campus tonight, 19th February 2007,from 7pm Detroit time. It was just over a month ago I met him for the third time, but this time in London at Ronnie Scott's. He was helping Jack Ashford find his mallets when I bumped into him. Jack had misplaced them in the afternoon. This picture sums up the 'Soulful Tale' sessions March 2006 that Joe performed on. I snapped this as Bobby Eli, Joe and Bob Babbit posed for me. I was honoured to have met Joe and acquire his cherished book he wrote about his life. For an excellent article by Sue Whitall and photos of the funeral go here:

http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070210/UPDATE/702100429

Also, for a short video piece featuring Joe go here:
Joe Hunter in Anne Arbour 2003

The Velvelettes 2007

Copyright Carl Dixon 2006. The Velvelettes are currently getting airplay with their 'Soulful Tale' recording 'One of a kind (love affair)' and I thought it would be appropriate to link to some photo's of them in Detroit last year for the session and indeed Hemsby (UK) where I first met them in 2004: www.flickr.com/photos/motown/page3/

Welcome to my new blog

It's amazing what you can discuss over a Valentines dinner! I have decided to take the plunge and advice from my wife who strongly suggests a 'blog' is in my interest. As I am currently having to learn about web technology I thought it would be fitting to create this site today and share it with others. I have much to do like discover how to put a picture in the header. But that's for later.....
